Minic Rivera at the Blog Herald reported today on Six Apart’s new social media solutions that can be built on top of Movable Type 4. The enterprise solution can host a community of 1000s of blogs for a company or department.

I’ve yet to learn more about this. Does anyone have any information about how this solution would compare to a open source installation of the Elgg social networking platform. From what I have seen, the standard Elgg installation has a solid blogging platform built-in, and of course the open source code enables simple ways to extend its functionality.

I would love to hear any advantages of using a system such as Six Apart’s new social media solution over Elgg.

We can point to tons of ways that companies are using the new social media platform (some on MT4 beta, and many with the community pack for MT Enterprise 1.5) but I’m not as familiar with Elgg offhand. Are there specific areas of functionality you’re interested in? I might be able to do a good job of describing what we do well.

I should mention, we do have all of the features Elgg lists on their Features page, with the exception that OpenID is built in to MT4 and available on the current MT platforms already. But to be fair, we had an advantage there since it was invented at our company. ;)

Anil-
Hey thanks for taking the time to chat about this. I did a little MT4 homework today so I now have a couple more specific questions about the new social media platform. I would love to get your thoughts on this.

Is this new platform in a similar category to a multiblog installation such as WordPress Mu?

Or is the new social media platform more similarly categorized as a private social networking environment that gives members complete MT4 blogging tools, but also allows creation of private communities and other social networking features?

Or perhaps the the new platform doesn’t land near either of these categories..

In any case, please feel free to stop by anytime to discuss the social media platform and any new features that are shaping it’s future direction.

Also, I was excited to read about the upcoming open source release for Movable Type. (Anyone wanting more info about the open source release, find it here.) Will that be compatible with the social media platform?

thanks for your time,
-dan
